Ambassador Malac Opens Gulu’s Newly Renovated Multi-Drug Resistant TB Ward

On May 3rd, Ambassador Malac officially opened the newly renovated multi-drug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis ward at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital.

In her speech Ambassador Malac said that “TB diagnosis and treatment are now available nationwide, including at lower level health facilities – a real cause for celebration! And over the past few years, we have seen improvements in TB case detection and treatment success.”

The U.S. Government, through USAID, helped fund the renovation of this and five other MDR TB wards, which can now treat hundreds of patients nationwide.

Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis used to be a death sentence in Uganda prior to 2012. But thanks to treatment centers like this one, that is no longer the case. The U.S. Government is proud to have contributed to improving the health of all Ugandans through projects like these.
