The U.S Embassy has received information of possible terrorist threats to locations where Westerners, including U.S. citizens, congregate in Kampala, and that an attack may take place soon. Out of an abundance of caution, the U.S. Mission has cancelled some non-essential events scheduled at local hotels in the coming days. U.S. citizens staying or visiting hotels should expect increased security sweeps and delays when entering or exiting hotel areas.
The U.S. Embassy takes this opportunity to remind all U.S. citizens to review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security such as varying your daily routines and avoiding crowded locations.
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Uganda enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at www.Travel.State.Gov. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don’t have internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
Regularly monitor the State Department’s website, where you can find the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, and Travel Alerts. Read the Country Specific Information for Uganda. For additional information, refer to the “Traveler’s Checklist” on the State Department’s website.
