U.S. Embassy Kampala reminds U.S. citizens of the upcoming anniversary of 9/11 and to stay alert to the ongoing potential for terrorist attacks in Uganda. We also caution U.S. citizens of the possibility of retaliatory attacks in Uganda by al-Shabaab in response to the U.S. and Ugandan military actions in Somalia last week which killed al-Shabaab leader Ahmed Godane. The targets for these attacks could include hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, shopping malls, diplomatic missions, transportation hubs, religious institutions, government offices, or public transportation.
Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security such as varying your daily routines and avoiding crowded locations.
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Uganda enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at www.Travel.State.Gov. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don’t have internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
Regularly monitor the State Department’s website, where you can find the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, and Travel Alerts. Read the Country Specific Information for Uganda. For additional information, refer to the “Traveler’s Checklist” on the State Department’s website.
