U.S. Embassy Kampala alerts U.S. citizens of violent attacks against security installations and civilians in the western districts of Bundibuguyo, Ntoroko, and Kasese near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Dozens of people have been killed in these attacks since July 5. This area includes popular tourist destinations such as national parks and the Rwenzori Mountains. While there is no indication that foreign nationals are being targeted, the situation remains fluid and unpredictable. The U.S. Embassy recommends U.S. citizens traveling or living in the area exercise caution and monitor local media for the latest news on the situation.
U.S. Embassy Kampala wishes to remind U.S. citizens of the continued threat of potential terrorist attacks in the country. The targets for these attacks could include hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, shopping malls, diplomatic missions, transportation hubs, religious institutions, government offices, or public transportation.
Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
