On September 30, 2015, UPDF Chief GEN Katumba Wamala and five others received the U.S. Legion of Merit award for their leadership in support of ‪AMISOM, promoting regional stability, and for service to ‪‎Uganda.

The U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) Commander GEN Rodriguez decorated the six senior ‪‎UPDF officers.

The Legion of Merit is given for exceptional meritorious conduct and outstanding achievements. Fewer than 200 foreign military personnel have received the award since it was created in 1942.

GEN Wamala and his colleagues are the first Ugandans to receive the Legion of Merit.
