U.S. MISSION UGANDA PRESS RELEASE | July 16, 2020 | PR 08/20

Kampala, Uganda – July 26, 2020 marks the 30-year anniversary of the signing of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). To commemorate, and celebrate, U.S. Mission Uganda will host two livestreamed events – a July 17 panel discussion on how to be an Inclusion Ambassador, encouraging accommodation for people with disabilities, and a July 24 concert with singer-songwriter Tony Memmel from Nashville (U.S.A.).

Since becoming law in the United States in 1990, the ADA ensures equal opportunities for, and prohibits discrimination against, people with disabilities in most spheres, including places of public accommodation, jobs, transportation, government services, and telecommunications. You can learn more about the law at https://www.usa.gov/disability-rights.

On Friday, July 17 at 11:00 a.m. EAT, the public is invited to join an alumni panel discussion on “Becoming an Inclusion Ambassador” via Facebook Live at https://www.facebook.com/U.S.EmbassyKampala/. There will be an opportunity to ask questions during the chat.

The panel features:

  • Simon Eroku, YALI Mandela Washington Fellow 2015, Founder of OpenSigns Impact Innovation Ltd.
  • Martin Lubwama, YALI Regional Leadership Center 2020, Strategic Planning Director of Malengo Foundation
  • Manuela Mulondo, Mandela Washington Fellow 2017, Founder of The Cradle
  • Victoria Nalule, Mandela Washington Fellow 2019, Inclusion Advocate

On July 24 at 7:00 p.m. EAT, the public is invited to a concert and discussion with Nashville singer-songwriter Tony Memmel. Tony was born without a left forearm. He taught himself to play guitar by constructing a cast out of tape that secures a guitar pick to his arm. He has gone on to become a successful musician, touring the United States and internationally. He is a previous winner of the WAMI Singer-Songwriter of the Year award and a finalist in the VH1 and Republic Records band competition. His bio can be found here: http://tonymemmel.com/wp/biography/.
