USAID, the Ministry of Education and Sports, and Peace Corps Uganda Organize the first annual Language Spellingcompetition

The My Language Spelling Bee is Uganda’s first ever national local language spelling competition for P3 pupils.

These competitions are brought to you through a partnership between USAID-Uganda, the Ministry of Education and Sports, and Peace Corps Uganda.  This year’s competition will be held in 6 different languages in districts throughout the country.

All primary schools are strongly encouraged to participate.  Competitions will be held at the school level, the district level, and at the national level.  Among other prizes, the winners of our national competitions will win a trip to Kampala with their parents and a school representative for our grand finale celebration and award ceremony.

If you are a parent or teacher who would like to bring this activity to a school near you, please contact your District Education Offices for official My Language Spelling Bee handbooks and other information.  For additional information and updates, you can also visit the My Language Spelling Bee Uganda page on Facebook, or e-mail us atMyLanguageSBUganda@gmail.com.

To get started, here are some practice word lists for this year’s competition.  Pupils should practice using these words and spelling them properly in school and at home.  Additional literacy activities can also be found in the official My Language Spelling Bee handbook.

The languages included in this year’s competition were selected based on their development of set orthographies.  If you would like your language to be included in future competitions, have your local language boards contact us for further details.
